Fishers of Men by Rhonda Vincent

Here's a beautiful bluegrass piece. It's a short, but very sweet one.

Enjoy, and I will add a little personal touch to this tomorrow sometime.

Me and Jesus

This was not the first choice, for the first blog post, but this idea popped up in my head, so sometime when the Lord talks, you just listen.

Some of us recall that George Jones, aka The Possum, passed earlier this year. I was reminded of the privilege I had of working his concert in college at our famous E.A. Diddle Arena. He truly was not just a musical hero, but a hero to those in this world who struggle with their demons throughout this game we call life.

His memorial service was the day after my birthday, and it was one of those events that reigned over any celebrating that I did that week. I recall dragging at work the morning of May 3rd, since the service was aired online from midnight to 2:40 am Korea time.

The goal here is to listen to music and reflect and how it reminds of our spiritual journeys. Have a listen, and I'll offer a small reflection below as well.

Me and Jesus, Brad Paisley cover

Here are the lyrics too.

Me and Jesus Lyrics

Think about words such as this here:
And I know a man
That once was a loser
But he went out one day
And made an altar out of a stump

Who pops in your mind when you heard those words "made an altar out of a stump?
Is it that you someone personally who has found Jesus, and made that dramatic change in their life?

If you ever heard stories about George Jones in the early days, and George Jones in the later years, you would understand that this was a perfect song about his walk with Christ. That was one of the reasons that I called Mr. Jones a musical hero. It wasn't just his music that made him a legend. It was the way that he used his spiritual light to show a better world to all of those around him, especially the young singers in the industry.

We all have battles that we face daily. Some battles are minute, in comparison with the battles of others. If we remember those who have come before us, and we recall their battles, then we should be inspired. We don't need that fancy preachin', or big shiny car. All we need is to walk with Jesus (as Tom Hall wrote in this song), because he will pull us through those battles.

I think of the small battles I have faced in life. Foolish times where I abused the privilege of drinking, for reasons I do not even want to ponder these days. Self-induced depression, that I credit to lack of faith at certain points in life. I always seemed to find my way out of those light bouts by walking through the doors of certain churches that have carried me through a few dark times.

Hopefully you can find some meaning in this blog piece. If you do not even read anything, have a listen at least. The main purpose is to just listen to a song and reflect. If you want to add anything please comment below. I due promise to write something a little more journalistic next time.

Welcome

So this is my fourth blog that will go on air very soon here. I will use this to discuss how God is discussed in country music. Every country musician seems to discuss the Good Lord. I will offer my take some of these musicians and how they use such language in their music. Some of the songs take me back to some experiences in my life.

The goal here on this blog is to make you think. Make you think about times when you have been in need of a prayer, of the peace attained at church, a good sermon, or just time alone with God. Feel free to comment or send a message to me as well - jtower27@gmail.com
